Previously I said I was not going to do monthly beauty favourites because I was having a hard time rotating my products and finding something to obsess about. The thing is, with me, is that I have a bunch of favourites, and rarely venture out of that spectrum to use something else in my collection. Unless there's an occasion that compels me to really step it up a notch, that is. My routine does change, somewhat, according to the season, and that is why we've come to this post.
January has come with weather so sporadic you're likely to get whiplash if you think on it too long. One day it's warm, but not unbearable, the next day you can fry an egg on the pavement, and then the day after that you've got to pile on the knits and cover every inch of skin. Summer is quite possibly the most unpredictable season in Melbourne, but when it gets hot, it gets hot. I despise hot weather and do not do well when I have to leave the house in the middle of the heat.
"Out of the frying pan and into the fire," is how I would describe the summers here in Australia. Obviously, other states have it worse, which is precisely the reason why you won't find me visiting the Big Banana between October and March. Sorry, Aunt Cheryl, the trip will have to wait.
Anyways, I've found my favourites for the season, and I'm sure you all would love to see my choices, so let's get to it.
For the base, I've picked out Wet n Wild Ultimate Sheer SPF 15 Tinted Moisturiser in Natural. I rarely ever see this talked about on blogs, which is a shame, because it's a really simple tinted moisturiser that blends quickly and easily, yet gives a light to medium (and really lightweight) coverage that covers minor imperfections and evens out skin tone. I buff this out with a buffing brush to make sure there are no streaks because sometimes I don't always blend it out with my hands properly. This lasts all day and rarely needs a primer underneath unless my skin is really dehydrated.
Next one up is the Australis Ready Set Go Finishing Powder, which is one of my latest discoveries. I found it at Priceline after looking for a new powder that didn't accentuate dry skin and helped prevent the foundation on my nose from moving under my glasses. This is a very finely milled silicone-based powder that feels incredibly silky and blurs imperfections. Surprisingly, it does a much better job at keeping shine at bay than other powders I've tried, and a touch up doesn't look cakey or obvious. The only problem is that this has to be the very last step in makeup application, or else nothing else will stick to the face.
The best mascara I've found this season is the Barry M Showgirl Lengthening Mascara, as it's long lasting and coats each lash individually to lengthen it. It's not the perfect mascara I'm looking for, as it flakes a tiny bit by the end of the day behind my glasses, but it's close. I'm also particularly fond of Freedom Makeup Brow Pomade in Ash Brown, it is really easy to use, matches my eyebrows exactly, and you can make the application as heavy or lightly as you want it. It looks quite natural when I use it to lightly fill in sparse areas on my brows. Makeup Revolution Brow Pomade is identical in formula.
Of course, I can't have a favourites post without mentioning my holy grail eyeshadow primer, the Wet n Wild Fergie Centerstage Eyeshadow Primer aka the Photo Focus Eyeshadow Primer. It is seriously a makeup-saver during the warmer months where my hooded eyes become so greasy so quickly. Without this primer, I wouldn't have developed an obsession for eyeshadow palettes, so that's probably not a good thing, heh. Speaking of palettes, the Chi Chi Sun Kissed palette has been my favourite this summer, the colours are just so fresh and exciting enough for all of the special occasions I went to this season.
I've been using Makeup Revolution One Blush Stick in Rush more than any of the other blushes, for the main fact that it is a lovely peachy coral shade that also acts as a highlighter thanks to the champagne shimmer. It's really easy to use as all you need to do is draw a bit of it on your cheeks and then blend it out with your fingers. Makeup Revolution Radiant Highlighter in Breathe is also another favourite because it's such a pearly powder it makes my skin look radiant without looking sparkly, which makes it perfect to go all over my face under my finishing powder, as the powder makes my skin look quite matte.
I've been using Makeup Revolution's Pro Fix Oil Control Fixing Spray to set my makeup before I use the Australis Finishing Powder, as it actually does help, somewhat, with the oil production. Not using this means my skin becomes oily more quickly, so I like having more control over it.
I've been reaching for the Chi Chi Eau De Parfum in Peony, because despite the fact that I have practically no sense of smell, Peony is so reminiscent of Summer.
Ironically, as I post this, it is quite the opposite of summer today. I'm super happy, that after two days of warmth, especially one so thick and muggy as yesterday, that we've got rain, brisk air and a lovely change to the atmosphere. It's like the rain brings on a whole new appearance to the world, as it enriches the greenery and raindrops hanging from plants like diamonds.
Look at me, waxing (very horrible) poetry!
What is your summer holy grail product?
