MAKEUP VANITY SLASH DESK SLASH BEDSIDE TABLE

Some of you might remember from one of my previous posts that I was going on a spending ban for two months, saving money for new furniture being part of the reason. I mentioned that I was going to buy a desk, as well as some components to make up a vanity and such. My housemate is moving up to Cairns fairly soon, and we've taken over the lease to save ourselves the time and effort of looking for a new rental. Which means that the second bedroom will be free for Sean to move his work office out of our bedroom and into the other room. This gives me the space next to my bed to set up a vanity that also plays the role of a desk and a bedside table.

Just thinking about it has me on my toes, as I've got to be able to contain all of my (still growing) collection of makeup, blog props and supplies, and documents and stationery in and on the desk, and yet still have enough space on the surface for me to comfortably work on my laptop. This also has to be done on a tight budget because I need to be a cheapskate when it come to home decoration or else the male in my life gives me crap for being addicted to having a pretty home. I really should get a job at Kmart because then I have a reason to go home with all the pretties they have on display.

Despite the fact that I've got a spending ban in place, I have already bought my desk from Officeworks, and it now sits in the garage awaiting it's time to shine. I wasn't going to get it until the ban was done and dusted but then Sean put the fear of it no longer being available at that point in my head, so we went and picked it up. I got the Hyde Loop Leg Student Desk as it was small enough for the space, white in colour, had a drawer and was cheap enough for my budget.
Yes, it looks quite petite, but that's okay, I'll make it work! I'm still trying to decide whether I want to repaint or cover the drawer front with a different colour, like teal or mint, but in the meantime, I'll keep it as it is. I'm considering getting some tempered glass cut to size to go on top of the desk so that my makeup and sloshed tea (and wine) doesn't stain the laminate, but I'll leave that for later. The drawer is divided into two compartments, and I got the measurements for the compartments so that I could find drawer dividers that were just the right size. I got fed up when I couldn't find anything good, so now I'll just DIY my own dividers with some MDF and white spray paint. Easy peasy.

The following items is a list of what's in the first image:
1. Vintage Train Case (I purchased a similar case on eBay for $12.90).
2. Kmart Brass-coloured Hammered Cup with Fragrant Candle - $6
3. Kmart Hexagonal Mirror - $15
4. Kmart Hexagonal Marble Coasters 4pc - $6
5. Kmart Montreal Office Chair $39
6. Tulips

Okay, okay, I have a thing for Kmart home decor, but I can't help it, they are cheap and cute, which is a dangerous combination. I discovered the idea of using a beauty train case on Pinterest and went on eBay straight away, and my search immediately turned up a genuine piece that I snapped up straight away. It's perfect as additional storage on the top of my vanity, and is quite large, 33x26x11cm, so that's a decent amount of extra space.

That's all I've got so far. I'm still looking at more stuff, but these are the ones that I definitely would like to have on my vanity/desk/bedside table. I feel like I'm missing something important but I can't, for the life of me, figure out what it is.

Ideas, anyone?

  1. Lovely list of items! I just purchased a desk sort of similar to this, except it's opposite! White drawers with wood surrounding it. May I ask how much you paid? I got mine for just under $200 because it was on sale from $300 haha! Like you I was going to wait... but then I saw it went on sale and HAD to pick it up!

  2. If only it went on sale so then I could justify getting it sooner rather than later It was only $69 because I had to go as cheap as possible, especially for the size, but I'm happy with it. I didn't want to commit to an expensive one because once we buy a new house, I'll get a bigger vanity.
